Careggine

Careggine crosses from the slopes of Mountain Sumbra on an area of 24.46 square kilometers, on the eastern versant  of Apuan Alps. The plateau on which the village stands, at 882 meters above sea level, is one of the most beautiful panoramic terraces overlooking the entire valley.
The old town center, collected inside the walls, offers striking views through the narrow cobbled streets, where stone houses come forward  on the typical turrets and covered terraces that were used for the conservation of agricultural products. The parish Church of S. Peter, founded in 720 by Pertualdo, still conserves original medieval structure. Huts crown encircle the village, built with steep roofs, proof of the pastoral vocation of the area.
Nowadays, the Apuan Alps’ Park is recovering the farm "La Bosa", with its characteristic farmhouse, in the immediate proximity of the village.
Ancient chestnut trees surround the plateau to give way to birch’s forests and beech trees in the highest altitude. Easy hikes connect to places with suggestive names: Majesty of the Ant, the Cat and Vianova. Here, during the winter, are running going back up structures, with school camps and allies for the more experienced.
A beautiful scenic route connects with Capanne di Careggine and Isola Santa, where the old village with the roofs covered with slabs of slate, is reflected in the waters of the namesake artificial lake. Here we find the "Fisherman's House", point of reception and refreshment for all fishing enthusiastics and many routes and locations for fishing.
Another lake, the one of Vagli, instead hides an entire village. Few people know that Fabbriche  was the name of the village built by Bergamo’s blacksmiths who were employed here the iron extracted from Monte Tambura, which was part of the Municipality of Careggine, and that the bells of Fabbriche’s church, the only thing that the inhabitants managed to preserve, are still in Vergaia, where it was also moved the cemetery.
Log on to the Apuan Alps’ Park web cam on Bosa for a real-time view of Careggine’s area.
