Pieve Fosciana

Pieve Fosciana rises on a river  terrace at the foot of an hill called Fosciano  at 360 meters of height on a surface of 28,77 km and takes the name from Saint John Battista’s Pieve, one of the most ancient in Garfagnana around which streets and stone houses typical of this village unfold in.
As the legend said the founder of the church was San Frediano, bishop of Lucca in the 6th century. The church, in the 11th century took, in effect, the name of Plebes of Fosciana. Inside the building you can admire various works of art, beginning with an Annunciation by Andrea Della Robbia, paintings of the Lucca artist Pietro Paolini’ school and Antonio Consetti from  Modena. a It is lso interesting the sacristy of the 16th century. There is also preserved a baptismal font of the 14th century.
Other interest building is the 19th century Convent of Sant’Anna . A historical curiosity: Pieve Fosciana, in 1831, was the first village in Tuscany to expose the Italian flag.
In the immediate vicinity of the historic center, we find the location The Mills, where already in the 18th century several water mills worked the products of Plan of the Parish’s fertile irrigated plain. Today, the Mill Set is still operational and can be visited.
Also in the vicinity of the center there is also the lake and Prà di Lama thermal spring, whose waters are chloride-sulphate-alkaline are highly appreciated for their healing properties.
In “Ai Frati” resort rises the Convent founded in 1435 by Beato Ercolano da Piegale (Perugia) dedicated to Saint Francesco now partly restored and converted to farm holiday company.
Some of the highpoints are: Freedom Day, the first Sunday after Easter, the feast dedicated to Formenton eight rows, maize traditionally cultivated for the production of corn meal, the exhibition of cribs in December and January, the challenge between districts for the Carnival, in July, the feast of the shepherds in the village of Capraia and, in August, three days dedicated to historical and gastronomic Ludovico Ariosto in the beautiful scenery offered by the medieval village of Sillico.
And at Feast of the Assumption no one can miss the big and bustling festival on the shores of Pontecosi Lake, banks than on other days of the year invite you to easy walks, relaxing afternoons fishing, or funny observations of the very numerous avi fauna.
