San Romano Garfagnana

San Romano in Garfagnana extends to an altitude of 555 meters, on the hills on the left bank of Serchio on an area of 26.04 km square.
In its territory, placed in a strategic position, rises the great medieval castle Verrucole, partly rebuilt during the Renaissance. The namesake suburb sits at the foot of the fortress inside which took place in ancient times, the life and history of the country. It is from this summit that you can enjoy the superb views looking over the Apuan Alps to Passo dei Carpinelli, and then stopping, on the limestone rampart of Pania of Corfino and Orecchiella Park, whose its visitor center is located right in the territory of San Romano.
Many events are held inside the Fortress of Verrucole during the year: historical pageants and music concerts taken in this scenery as an unique image. Also in Verrucole an ancient mill was recovered, in which you can visit a museum exhibition linked to one of the more detailed productions of this territory: the walnut oil.
It is recommended to visit the villages of Vibbiana, Orzaglia, Caprignana, Naggio, Sillicagnana, Villetta and little village of Sambuca perched around St. Pantaleon’s Church, surrounded by barley fields and chestnut trees forests. The village of Sambuca deserves particular attention, built of black rocks overlooking Serchio.
Between the events not to miss there are the historic and gastronomic festival in early August in San Romano, maccheroni’s festival in Sillicagnana and the archery of the shape in the plant of Orzaglia. In the palace Pellicioni Marrazzini in San Romano, seat of the Centre for Documentation and Enhancement of the IGP Farro, the archaeological museum of the territory was recently inaugurated, with the exposure of numerous finds from the excavations of Verrucole Fortress.
