The Apuan Alps represent one of the most important and well-known karst areas of Europe. Out of 800 caves explored, almost 200 have a spatial development of more than 100 meters. The Panie group, with the Vetricia plateau, the valley of Arnetola and the Carcaraia, are real havens for speleologists; in Carcaraia the “Sentiero dei -1000” connects 5 entrances.

In addition to the Apuan system, other caves are located in the karst area of Orecchiella with the Pania di Corfino and Monte Ripa.
