Ring of Monte Forato
Monte Forato, with its 1223 meters of height, is not one of the highest mountains of the Apuan Alps, but it’s certainly the most particular. The great arc of rock is in fact a unique feature among the beautiful peaks that divide the Garfagnana from Versilia.
Our route starts from the characteristic village of Fornovolasco, overlooked by the Queen of the Apuan Alps, the Pania della Croce. A circular route will lead us to go up, first, along the ancient salt road up to Foce di Petrosciana from where we will be able to admire another particular Apuan peak, Mount Procinto and its characteristic cylindrical shape.
Leaving the small pass that descends towards Versilia we continue our route along a beautiful and scenic ridge with splendid views of the Tyrrhenian coast and other beautiful peaks such as Mount Cross.
We’ll soon leave the ridge and enter a beautiful beech forest. The arc of Mount Forato will appear suddenly, leaving us to see the sea in the distance.
After a lunch break in front of the arch, we’ll start the descent along a path that will give us other beautiful views of the Pania della Croce and in the distance the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines.

Path that provides from 4 to 5 hours of walking with a fair difference in altitude on terrain at times challenging.
