The Orecchiella Natural Reserves are the pride of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine National Park. A territory with a landscape of rare beauty. Here deer, mouflon sheep, wild boars and wolves and many species of birds, some migratory and others who have found their home in an ideal habitat can be seen. The royal eagle who has always been present on the Pania di Corfino, extends his hunting territory up to the summits of Monte Prato and Monte Vecchio.
The Orecchiella Park Visitor’s Centre can be reached from Castelnuovo di Garfagnana by following the directions for Villa Collemandina and Corfino. With. An “assisted” pathway reaches the fauna observation areas where you can easily see deer, mouflon sheep, bears and roe deer. The lovers of botany will be fascinated by the mountain flora with its wonderful summer flowers, and the botanic garden “Pania di Corfino”.
The itinerary follows the road to San Romano in Garfagnana, through the villages of Caprignana and Orzaglia, until to reach Verrucole. Here with a short walk it is possible to visit the magnificent medieval Fortress, one of the most significant monuments of the system of military fortifications of the Estense Duchy in Garfagnana. A real living-museum where guide-reenactors interpret life of the 13th century.
