The Lake of Pontecosi is a hydroelectric basin built on the Serchio river, near Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, an ideal place for resting and wintering numerous aquatic birds, including coots and wild ducks of various species that frequent the shallow waters around the reeds. On its banks, the small village that gives its name to the lake was originally a castle for controlling access to the river, already in decline at the end of the 13th century.
Pontecosi has three churches, the parish church of San Magno, which houses an important socio-cultural center, the church of the Madonna dell’Addolorata and the oratory of the Madonna delle Grazie which is accessed by an ancient humpback bridge. On the right bank of the lake, there are picnic areas and fishing spots while on the left a large equipped green area is ideal for spending a few relaxing hours with the children.
